Des holds a HND in Conservation Management and a PhD in bryology. He has 18 years of experience as a professional ecologist and has gained an excellent knowledge of bryophytes, birds, bats, dormice (license holder) and great crested newts (license holder), plus has undertaken significant amounts of work with reptiles, vascular plants, water voles, badgers and otters.
He has a good knowledge of Ecological Impact Assessment, Appropriate Assessment, Expert Witness, site management plans, species action plans, species status assessments, identification of key wildlife sites, BREEAM and the planning system in England and Wales.
The main sectors within which he has worked are wildlife conservation, windfarms, housing, urban regeneration, hospitals and schools/universities. He has contributed to five ecological reference books and is the principal authors of 14 papers published in international scientific journals.
Previous jobs include Associate Director of Ecology (Faber Maunsell) and European Research Manager (BirdLife International), with his work taking him to many different countries (e.g. Ecuador, Uganda, China and Jordan).
