The aim of the project,  commissioned by Amey Plc. in March 2015, was to inspect a bridge near Galashiels in the Scottish Borders looking for evidence of roosting bat.

Old Tweedy Bridge, which spans the River Tweed, is programmed for essential maintenance and engineers need to be aware of any bats roosts prior to the work going ahead.

SSWC used one of BAEs inflatable boats to get a good look at the bridge from underneath the arches before setting up ropes for the visual inspection using an endoscope and strong torch light.

“We found plenty of potential” commented SSWC Director Stuart Spray, “But on this occasion no actual bat roosts.”

Work on repairing the bridge will start in June 2015.
