03 June 2015: The SSWC team assist with the Staffin Island pilot whale stranding.

Whilst recovering from a night of bat work on the Isle of Skye, we became aware through social media that several pilot wales had beached on Staffin Island.

At about 3am on June 02 2015, 21 pilot whales beached at An Corran possible following a female who had become distressed trying to give birth. 18 of the original 21 whales were successfully re-floated at that time.

Unfortunately 11 of those recued re-beached themselves on the rock island of Staffin just a few hundred meters from the original stranding.

We joined a team of over 45 volunteers from all over Scotland coordinated by British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) with assistance from Marine Scotland. Trying to stabilise the whales whilst waiting for the tide to rise so the whales could be re-floated.

Although three did not make it back to sea, eight whales were re-floated and joined the rest of the pod which were reported to be waiting for them just of the coast.

A job well done.
